Matt & Kelsey's story
It was the last day of New Teacher Orientation for Tulsa Public Schools in August 2015, and teachers were encouraged to stick around and meet their new coworkers. Little did we know that this meet-and-greet would lead to shaking hands with the person we would spend the rest of our lives with! As the year progressed, we developed an ideal working relationship. Matt would come up with unique and creative ideas about lesson plans or a school trip, and Kels would iron out the details. We split responsibilities well and understood our roles as coworkers within the first few months of working together. We functioned on a much higher level together than we did alone, and it didn't take long for us to develop an audience of about 600 middle school students that noticed this natural chemistry. They even started an Instagram account with candid photos of us together taken throughout the school day using #mcabom - a combination of our last names. We ended up using the hashtag for our wedding in June of 2016. We are both still in the classroom - Kels teaches English at the Union 8th Grade Center and Matt manages a student internship program. As school started in the Fall of 2019, we entered a small business competition with the Mother Road Market - Tulsa’s first food hall. After a successful pop-up shop day, we were thrilled to win an opportunity to pursue yet another passion together: creating a community of literacy in Tulsa.
