A loan helped to buy basic supplies for her convenience store.

Mujeres Lago San Jorge Group's story

Divorced Guatemalan women have faced huge challenges of both housing and income. They have had to look for ways to create funds to support their families.

This is the case of 38-year-old Juana, who divorced her husband five years ago. She was only able to attend school for two years and was determined that her four children (5-11) have a complete education.

So Juana opened a convenience store, and with her determination and hard work, the business has grown. Besides selling basic staples, she also stocks personal care and cleaning products.

She has planned carefully and now needs to restock her shelves. Juana is requesting her forth Kiva loan to buy basic inventory for the store.

Juana and six other Maya Kaqchikel women are members of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank Mujeres Lago San Jorge, located just above the magnificent Lake Atitlan in the department of Solola.

Their principal businesses are beaded jewelry fabrication and convenience stores. To make additional income, the ladies sell prepared foods and wash clothes.

Since they have little or no formal education, their monthly educational training sessions, part of the Microcredit Plus program of loans, education and health care services, is of vital importance.

The educational training sessions are part of the monthly Trust Bank meetings and cover an aspect of four topics: health, family, women, business.

Juana especially liked learning about savings and looking for new ways to sustain her businesses.

Thank you, Kiva investors!
