Laurel's loan finished fundraising, but these other borrowers need your support
A loan helped me to maintain the hotel during and following the COVID-19 pandemic..
I moved my family to Los Angeles, California in 2009 to help my father manage the family home. We ended up staying seven years while my daughter, Tanya, and son, Tim, finished school. After my parent's house was sold, I realized I was going to need to find a job. I did not want to continue living or driving in Los Angeles. I began looking in Washington state for the next opportunity as we had enjoyed the ten years we had spent there before moving to LA. The Hotel Cathlamet was for sale and for some reason the ad came up on my browser while I was looking at jobs in LA. I had often thought of running a small motel by the beach when I retired. I talked to the kids about it. We were intrigued and came to check it out. We’d had plenty of visitors and slumber parties throughout the years so I figured it wouldn't be too hard. Three months later, on April 1st, 2016, we were running the hotel wondering how we ever thought it might be easy. We have learned a lot in four years and understand elevators, fire systems, laundry life cycles and water-fed coffee machines. We are calmer during emergencies and easily greet guests in parties of twenty or at 2:00am. 2020 started out busier than normal. We had plans to insulate the building and upgrade the rooms. Then COVID-19 arrived, and we are still trying to figure out what will happen next. We are currently on standby to provide housing for recovering patients in the county should the need arise. We are committed to keeping the hotel. It is the only hotel for miles on a long country road running beside the Columbia River. It is an important asset for the town of 500 and suits our desire to meet and help others in a slower paced incredibly beautiful environment. Besides, it’s now home as well as our occupation.
