Joel's loan finished fundraising,
but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!

A loan helped build a high tunnel to increase my production of herbs and vegetables.

Joel's story

Joel Laboy Los labradores farm Mayaguez, PR Born and raised in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, a very noisy city. At the age of 16 I discovered love for nature, especially plants, after a hiking in El Yunque Rain Forest. For this reason I decided to study a bachelor degree in Horticulture from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez Campus. Here I discovered my passion on plants and agriculture. Once I finished I had the opportunity to work with the USDA TARS with exotic fruits. Here I experienced how to manage a farm. This motivated me on buying a farm and be able to produce healthy food for my country, as most of the products we consume is imported. Having decided to make Mayaguez our home town for me, my wife, and kids to keep growing in the agriculture business, we bought a 7 acre farm. For the past four years we have been working with peppermint for restaurants and bars distribution. In PR most of this crop is imported, as most of the food consumed. During this journey we learned how to create a successful and sustainable growing method. This implies complete control of the environment and automatization of irrigation and fumigation. This help to be able to have an organic product by reducing operational costs at long term. At the moment we are running with one greenhouse.
