Adlai's loan finished fundraising,
but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!

A loan helped a family-owned bookstore in Pittsburgh return to business as a community hub.

Adlai's story

Owning a bookstore was a goal that Jill and I had been working toward for as long as either of us could remember. We're lifelong book lovers, and reading is what brought us together. We met a decade ago while working at a publishing house in New York, and in 2012, we moved to Pittsburgh, PA to build a life together. We still wanted literacy to be a key focus in our lives. Fast forward to October of 2016 when, after months of planning, painting, and book buying, we opened White Whale Bookstore. At the time, a Kiva loan helped us to make some improvements to the facade. The past three years since then have been extraordinary. And challenging. And rewarding. Our Bloomfield neighborhood, along with the greater literary community in Pittsburgh, have been so welcoming to us and our store, and in return we work as hard as we can to make White Whale a place worthy of that passion. We’ve made friends and watched families starting to grow up in the store. Our own toddler, Farrin, has spent her whole short life in it, and we hope it’ll be around for generations to come.
