Rose Marie's story
I started my career at 16 years old. I was one of eight children from a blue collar Italian family. The Beauty industry was something I was always fascinated by - the hair, the makeup, the fashion! When my oldest sister told my parents that she thought I was too young to go to beauty school, I wanted to prove them all wrong. When I was in 10th grade, I started going at night to the Pittsburgh Beauty Academy in downtown Greensburg. From 6 to 10 PM, four nights a week for 2 years. I did not want to go to Vo-Tech because I didn't want to miss out on my high school years, so I did both. I would come home from school and get my regular school homework done immediately, then start on homework for beauty school. I often fell asleep on my books. My father would wake me to get ready for beauty school at night. I started high school at 7 AM and had to be up at 5 AM, so I got little sleep those days. I was determined and a good student. I had to study to get good grades and I made honor role. I always had a full schedule, no study halls. I made the most of my high school years, going to regular school, night school and still being a teenager. My mother was a registered nurse and worked second shift so there was always a parent home for us children. My father was an inspector for The Elliotte Company in Jeanette. My father would drive me to and from Beauty School 4 nights a week. When I graduated from Beauty school, I was still in high school, just finishing up my senior year. I took my graduation money and put it towards my Teachers license which I received soon after. I was a full time beauty student by then. Back then, I couldn't wait to say I was doing hair for 10 years. Ten years came and went then 20, then 30 and now I'm working on my 40th year this year. Wow! What an adventure! From all the famous people I met, to the places I traveled to learn my craft. Through the years, I educated on my days off for several manufacturers, which was a great experience! It taught me how to be a better speaker in public and with my clients. In my first year as a style, I worked at Command Performance. I then went to Johnny's Hair Styling Center in Greensburg, not far from home. I worked for him for 9 years and he was a great man and Mentor! From there, I left to start my own business.
