Sope Khadim Group's story

Fatou is the president of the group Sope Khadim (which means 'to love' in Wolof, the most spoken local language in Senegal). She is the one in the photo posing with her hands on the goods. She is 45 years old, married, and has seven children - five sons and two daughters. They all go to school. They are aged from 5 to 25 years old. Her husband is a mechanic. Her dream is to become a big retailer with all the necessary paperwork (company registration, retail license, etc.). She aims to have a large store. She does not have high academic qualifications. She relies on microfinance institutions to develop her business. She gets supplies from the weekly markets in her local area, and sells her products in her neighbourhood. She is engaged in selling various products.

For this loan, she will purchase more vegetables, fresh fish, fishery products, etc. With the profits, she will be able to manage her children's schooling, pay for prescriptions, and help her husband to provide for their children. She has been engaged in retail for more than 10 years. She likes this business very much because it gives her financial autonomy. Her business problems are the lack of funds, and the occasional damage to goods.
