Maria's story

Maria, born and raised in Northern California & Ignacio born in Mexico & raised in Southern California, these two people met working at the same restaurant in San Francisco. Their friendship blossomed and they are now married, proud parents of two boys and owners of a Chicana Style Café CHICA Oakland. Maria & Ignacio's passion for the culinary arts brought these two together and since 2014 they have brought their passion to life. The concept of Chicana/o food (first generation Mexican-American) was sparked by the personal cultural background of growing up from a Mexican family in the United States & molding the two cultures of food together. What motivates them every day is that they are reminded everyday of the connection of food and community at the table. Community colliding with food at the table, that's what brings people together and that's what bring people into CHICA Oakland. Maria & Ignacio started CHICA back in 2015 as a tented vendor in San Francisco's infamous Off the Grid. In December of 2016, they opened the doors to CHICA Oakland, a cute Chicana style Café. Maria, Chef/Co-owner, is head of the kitchen. Her and her team prep as much as they can from scratch which means her popular sauces, baked goods & more are made in house and served fresh, to-order. Ignacio , Co-Owner, is the back bone that organizes the operations of it all & picks up wherever is needed including the kitchen (You can catch the couple cooking together on busy weekends!)
