but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!

Ixil 3 Group's story

Maria is 60 years old. During her childhood she worked in a restaurant, because her parents' income was not enough to sustain the family expenses. She is uneducated as her parents could not afford her studies.

Maria got married at the age of 18 and she initially went to the fields to work with her husband. Later she started a restaurant. She got to know about ACMUV's credit opportunities for women through her neighbors. This year she will get her fourth credit. Since her first credit she has been expanding her restaurant, buying supplies, materials, utensils, and equipment for the restaurant.

María is the leader of Ixil 3 group. The group consists of six women, five from the Ixil Maya ethnicity and one from K’iche’ Maya ethnicity. The group will use 66 percent of their loan for textile, 17 percent for construction, and 17 percent for food.

On an average, each member of the group has five children and the average age of the members of the group is 46 years. Forty-nine percent of the group members are illiterate, 34 percent did not finish their primary education, and 17 percent studied up to the ninth grade.
