Madina's story

Madina is 18 years old and lives in the town of Makindye in the Makindye region of Uganda. For the past three years, Madina has been working hard to manage her food stall, which sells mangoes, oranges, lemon and passion fruit.

To help expand her business, Madina has requested a loan of 800,000 Ugandan shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to purchase more fruits, and will help Madina to generate greater profits. Using the profits of the business, Madina will be able to buy for herself personal items like clothes, pay house bills and provide basic needs for the family like food, thereby improving their standards of living. Madina hopes that in the future she will be able to buy a plot of land.

Madina is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities and a forum for life-skills training.
