A loan helped to purchase one loom and a variety of high quality threads and increase business production.

Rosas De Chuaxocol Group's story

Most of the 32,000 women participating in Puente de Amistad's "Microcredit Plus" program have little or no formal education. This is true for Isabel, one of the members of the Communal Bank of Puente de Amistad “Rosas de Chuaxocol”, who lives in a rural area in the department/state of Totonicapán. She is 27 years old and could only attend school for two years.

A couple of years ago, Isabel opened her own textile weaving business with colorful “cuts”, called skirts. Isabel is dedicated to fixing the colored threads that are then placed on the looms. The "cut" fabric takes an average of 7 days to make 8 "cuts". This work is done by Isabel's husband and a worker, who operate the loom standing up.

Isabel needs this second loan from Kiva to buy one wooden loom and a variety of thread. Thanks to the income generated by the business, Isabel and her husband can provide better living conditions and education for their four children.

Isabel and seven other Mayan K'iche 'women benefit from the Puente de Amistad "Microcredit Plus" program. They acquire basic business management tools (planning, budgeting) that help them with their traditional textile businesses. Women gain power and confidence as they learn about rights, self-esteem, health, hygiene, and nutrition. Every two months, they have access to health care services.

Thank you, Kiva lenders, for partnering with Friendship Bridge!
