El Jardin 2 Group's story

María is the secretary of the Communal Bank of Puente de Amistad “El Jardin 2”. She is a talented weaver of "cuts" or typical skirts in the department/state of Quiché. She comments: "Women like me are proud to wear traditional textiles. This is part of our identity and reflects our culture. I am more proud to make this garment that is so essential in women's clothing."

María is 20 years old, studied five years and lives with her parents. She started three months ago with her own business weaving colorful "cuts". The economic income allows María to help with household expenses. She has three wooden looms that she and her relatives work. Every month, Maria delivers an average of 15 "cuts". In order to continue investing in the business, María is requesting her first Kiva loan. She will buy a variety of multi-colored thread cones.

Non-formal education is the main basis for the empowerment of women in the "Microcredit Plus" program (loans, education, health services). Since the 32,000 women in the program have little to no formal education, a facilitator uses games and pictures to share information about business, health, women, and family. The information on effective business practices is very easy to apply and helps the seven women of this communal bank with their textile businesses. Thanks to the friendly hand between Kiva and Puente de Amistad lenders, Mayan women like María envision a better future for themselves and their families.
