Estrellas De Cunen Group's story

Santa, a member of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Estrellas de Cunen” in the department/state of Quiche, is a hardworking 23-year-old mother of two children (3,4). The child in the photo is the son of a group member. She works alongside her husband in a traditional textile business. She also raises chickens. Santa began the businesses four years ago when she left her parents and began a new life with her husband. Fortunately, the couple is realizing the results of their hard work and both businesses are growing. Santa wants to enlarge both the traditional textile and poultry business. She is requesting her first KIVA loan to buy a floor loom and some baby chicks.

The businesses of Santa are growing because of hard work and effective business management practices. At the monthly meetings, Santa, along with the other seven Maya K’iche ladies in the Trust Bank, learn ways of effectively managing their animal husbandry and traditional textile businesses. Sessions are designed by a facilitator who uses games, role playing, pictures and diagrams to share information about family, women, health and business. Every other month, they have access to basic health care services. Friendship Bridge calls the combination of loans, education and health care “Microcredit Plus.”

Santa and her friends are poised to step into a brighter and more successful future. Thank you, Kiva investors, for partnering with Friendship Bridge, and giving Santa and the ladies in the Trust Bank some of the tools they need to make real sustainable change!.
