Las Empoderadas Group

Panajachel, Sololá, Sololá Department, Guatemala / Food

Las Empoderadas Group's loan finished fundraising,
but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!

A loan helped to buy personal care products, shoes and ingredients for her (Claudia's) recipes.

Las Empoderadas Group's story

The majority of the 32,000 ladies who participate in the Friendship Bridge “Microcredit Plus” program (loans, education, healthcare) have more than one business to cover their expenses. Twenty-four-year-old Claudia, the Secretary of the Trust Bank “Las Empoderadas”, needs 2 businesses to help support her 3 children (1, 3, 5 years old). She has a food cart where she offers delicious fried chicken/potatoes and also sells shoes/women’s sandals. Her husband is a day laborer but does not make enough income to support the family. Claudia is requesting her 1st Kiva loan to add an additional business of offering personal care products, as well as to buy shoes and ingredients for her food business.

Most of the women in the Trust Bank have little or no formal education. Claudia is exceptional, since she has a teaching certificate and worked as a teacher for a short time. At their monthly meetings, the ladies participate in educational sessions designed by a Facilitator who uses pictures, diagrams, role playing games to share information. Topics are drawn from 4 areas: business, health, women, and family. They are updated each year to reflect the changing needs of the ladies. Every other month, the women have access to basic health care services like blood pressure screenings and PAP smears, as well as family planning.

Claudia and her friends are very grateful that Kiva investors take the time to learn about them and fund their much needed loans. Thank you to each of you!
