Embera Puru Community Bank Group's story

Founded in 2013 and located in the Darien province of Panama, the Community Bank of Embera Puru is a small indigenous financial institution that provides the members of the community the ability to have savings, take out small loans, and have access to financial literacy. A lot of members in this community are financially excluded from more traditional financial institutions, but the Community-owned Bank provides these members a chance at financial inclusion in their own community.

During the last seven years, the 21 members are very committed to the growth of the rural bank since it has given them the opportunity to improve their quality of life. By giving a loan to this Community Bank, you are providing access to financial services and creating jobs during the crucial planting season.

Even though the executive board is all male, the majority of the members are hard-working Embera indigenous women (15 women total) who dedicate themselves to beautiful traditional indigenous art, crafts-making and agriculture.

With this loan of $2,800 US, the community bank aims to finish building their office in order to provide better service to their community. This community bank receives weekly monitoring and training from Global Brigades staff, guaranteeing transparency, empowerment, and financial inclusion for the inhabitants of Embera Puru.
