A loan helped to buy more sodas to sell.

Phiona's story

Phiona is 23 years old and lives in the town of Rukoki in the Kasese region of Uganda. She is single and has 2 children who are both currently in school. For the past 2 years, Phiona has been working hard to manage her beverages business, where she sells sodas.

To help expand her business, Phiona has requested a loan of 600,000 UGX from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy more sodas, and will help Phiona to generate greater profits. Phiona will use the profits of the business to pay school fees for her children, buy personal items like clothes, pay household bills and provide the basic needs for the family like food. She plans to improve their standard of living.

Phiona hopes that in the future she will be able to buy a motorcycle to offer transport services in order to generate more income.

Phiona is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.
