Help Your Self Group's story

Oretha W., 45, is the leader of the group of five borrowers called Help Yourself. She did not have the opportunity to go to school due to poverty. She is involved with the sale of charcoal and has been doing this business for the last 21 years. Her business is located in Paynesville, on the outskirts of Monrovia. She started this business through the help of a family member. She is married with seven children whose ages range from 12-23 years old and are currently in school. She also helps to take care for two siblings. The challenge she faces is that there are so many vendors selling charcoal in the market. Oretha plans to use her 5,000 Liberian dollar portion of this 25,000 Liberian dollar group loan to purchase more charcoal to improve the business. Her goal is to improve her family's standard of living. In the photo that accompanies this profile, Oretha is holding the sign.
