Susan's story

I grew up in Toronto, Canada of American parents who left their home and roots seeking a better life away from the Vietnam War. They came to Canada with nothing except their dreams, and skills as many immigrant families do. My mom was pregnant with me when they arrived in Toronto. When I was 9 years old, my mom let me use her sewing machine. I quickly picked up basic sewing skills and made doll clothes for myself and friends. Shortly after I was making my own clothes too. I ended up with the sewing machine, gifted to me on my birthday, and with it the family mending basket too. I learned to make clothing patterns from tearing apart and repairing clothes. After I completed High School, I went on to study Fashion Design in Toronto. I learned many useful skills and also discovered the Global Fashion Industry is a major polluter, human rights violator and that 'Fast Fashion' has a big negative global impact. I chose instead to make my way into designing sustainable textile systems and making 'Slow Clothes'. 30 years later the SLOW CLOTHING movement has taken off and is becoming more and more a presence in the world of choice for apparel. My daughter was born into an environment of creative potential and has used her skills to make her way in her life as an artist. She's 22 now and has her own business as well as working with me on developing our business. I feel that having raised children in a creative and entrepreneurial setting gives them skills for life that they might not otherwise have the opportunity to cultivate. I am committed to working with individuals and groups that want to learn more about how to reduce their impact though their fashion and clothing choices. Teaching life skills like mending and reusing gives me direct contact with the next generation of people who will be overseeing the care of the planet and all its systems. Although my business is a small initiative it has a lot of power and passion behind it!
