Emanuel Chijam Group's story

Martha is the secretary of the Community Bank of Friendship Bridge "Emanuel Chijam". She is a K’iche Mayan woman who lives in a rural area of the Quiché Department. She is 22 years old and married to a weaver of "cuts" typical skirts. Martha and her husband save so that their two children (18 months and 3 years) have a better future.

In order to obtain additional income and provide better living conditions for the family, Martha started the pig, turkey and chicken raising business two years ago. She takes advantage of selling the animals in different villages near her community. Martha wants to have animal availability and applied for her first Kiva loan. She will buy pigs, turkeys and chickens. Martha dreams big and one of her goals is to expand her business.

This communal bank was formed by sevencreative women who have animal husbandry businesses. They meet monthly to make payments on their loans and participate in educational training, as part of the Microcredit Plus program (loans, training and health for life). The educational sessions cover topics that include women, health, families and businesses. Since women have an average of 2.6 years of formal education, these trainings provide much needed information to support themselves, their families and their businesses.

Thank you, Kiva lenders, for your generosity in financing these highly appreciated loans! Martha and her friends are ready to move towards a better future!
