Beckie's story

Looking back, I believe that my path of service in this world was shaped by growing up in a loving yet dysfunctional middle class home in the 1960's and 70's in Columbus, Ohio. Arguments between my mother and sister caused me to retreat into my bedroom and my inner world to listen for a another Voice that didn't yell. I could commune with this deeper, quiet voice while singing along and listening to music on my little record player, coloring and writing stories. During my early childhood I also had a wonderful listening presence in my life (my beloved Aunt Athena) who would seek me out when she came to visit and sit on my bed and really see me and listen to my heart. Riding horses at a local public riding stable was a shared escape plan for both my sister and me to bond and connect while enjoying the peace and freedom of galloping through fields and forests while also experiencing relief from hurtful words at home. I idolized my sisters' ease with and knowledge of all things horses when I was a kid. and many, many years later I would reconnect with horses. The dissolution of a second marriage found me lonely and longing to feel that peace and freedom I had experienced with horses and my sister all those years ago. I followed up on an article I read in the Columbus Dispatch about a therapeutic riding center in the area that was looking for volunteers. After eleven years of volunteering and co-facilitating for this program I had gained not only an excellent horsemanship education but profound emotional and spiritual wisdom and healing from the horses, forever altering the trajectory of my life. I moved to the country, opened my heart to a growing desire to create my own unique horse-centered healing program, became trained as a spiritual director, certified as an equine assisted practitioner and bought my own horse! As Susan B. Anthony said, "The older I get, the greater power I seem to have to help the world; I am like a snowball -- the further I am rolled the more I gain." Even though I have been tempted over the last 10 years to quit I now find my 62-year old self even more inspired, energized and equipped to serve, renew and help heal women in our community with the innate gifts I have been given and skills I have developed over a lifetime. I have finally identified how Divine Equines can stand out in the huge and growing field of Equine Assisted Practices. Now I need professional business, marketing and technological support so that the women who need what the horses and I offer can find us and we can find them.
