Las Girasoles Tecpanecas Group's loan finished fundraising,
but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!

A loan helped to buy “laurel” and ingredients for delicious slushies.

Las Girasoles Tecpanecas Group's story

This enterprising woman has an active spirit that leads her to look for strategies to overcome poverty. This is very true for many of the small merchants who are clients of Puente de Amistad. One of them is María, president of the Community Bank of Friendship Bridge group “Las Girasoles Tecpanecas,” located in a rural area of the Department (state) of Chimaltenango. She is 27 years old, the single mother of a 5-year-old child, and lives in her mother's house.

Maria attended school for three years and, despite the challenges, had the initiative to start her own business five years ago. She sells an herb called "laurel" wholesale; it is used in traditional cooking. Additionally, she also sells delicious slushies or ice scrapes with fruit flavors. She is requesting her fourth Kiva loan to buy “laurel” and ingredients for delicious slushies.

The seven women of the communal bank speak the Kaqchikel language, and benefit from the monthly educational training, part of the "Microcredit Plus" program (loans, education, medical care) of Puente de Amistad. Information on budgeting, investment, and savings helps women manage businesses selling tamales, vegetables, and other food, and raising chickens. Maria mentions that the topic of saving motivated her to save in a piggy bank to cover unforeseen events. (The child in the picture is the son of one of the borrowers).

Thank you, Kiva lenders, for financing this loan.
