Sarah's story

Sarah is 23 years old and lives in the town of Rubirizi in the Kabwohe region of Uganda. She has 2 children who are currently in school. For the past 3 years, Sarah has been working hard to manage her beverage business, which sells soft drinks, soda, water, and juice.

To help expand her business, Sarah has requested a loan of 1,500,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy crates of soda and water. This will help Sarah to generate greater profits and Sarah's business will expand, hence more profits. She will be able to cater for basic needs at home, thereby improving on their standards of living. Sarah hopes that in the future she will be able to buy land and build a house.

Sarah is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.
