Lidia's story

Lidia is 23 years old and lives in the town of Aduku in the Lira region of Uganda. She is married and has 4 children who are all currently in school. For the past 4 years, Lidia has been working hard to manage her restaurant, which sells cooked food and soft drinks.

To help expand her business, Lidia has requested a loan of 700,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy more fresh varieties of food like maize flour, green bananas, beans, saucepans and plates. It will help Lidia to generate greater profits and improve her family's standards of living by providing them with enough food. Lidia hopes that in the future she will be able to start an outside catering business.

Lidia is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.
