Altas Llanuras Group's story

The three women in the group Altas Llanuras (High Plains) live in the Pochol area of Nahualá, Sololá, Guatemala. All three are married with children, wear traditional clothing and speak both the Mayan language, Quiche, and Spanish. They range in age from 21-40. Their education ranges from no school through to middle school.

Their businesses are all involved in selling traditional clothing. The women are starting their third cycle with the Namaste Creating Prosperity Program. They have learned many useful things from the Financial Literacy classes. They are now ready to learn more and improve their businesses even further.

Magdalena Teresa is 21 years old. For three years, she has had a business buying traditional clothing in the nearby city of Quetzaltenango, and selling it in her town. Among the things she has learned from her work with Namaste is to budget and plan, to sell a wider variety of products, and to sew and embroider popular styles of blouses. Her business advisor also recommended she sell in a nearby weekly market. She will use her loan to buy skirts, blouses and belts in styles that sell well. Her business goal is to someday buy a loom so she can do her own weaving.

When she started with Namaste, her monthly net profit was GTQ 1,600 ($208). At the start of this cycle it was GTQ 3,185 ($414) and she hopes to increase that to GTQ 4,027 ($523) by the end of this cycle.
