Joan's loan finished fundraising, but these other borrowers need your support

A loan helped to purchase more yellow bananas to sell in her food stall.

Joan's story

Joan is 21 years old and lives in the town of Makindye in the Makindye region of Uganda. For the past five years, she has been working hard to manage her food stall, where she sells yellow bananas.

To help expand her business, Joan has requested a loan of 2,000,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to purchase more yellow bananas, which will help Joan generate greater profits. Since Joan is a single mother, she will use the profits of the business to pay school fees for her children, buy for herself and the children personal items like clothes, pay house bills and provide basic needs for the family like food, thereby improving their standard of living.

Joan hopes that in the future she will be able to become the leading supplier of fruits in her area.

Joan is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.
