A loan helped to buy a new sewing machine.

Santa Isabel Group's story

Guatemala has been known worldwide for its gorgeous textiles with a variety of techniques that have always been a part of family traditions, especially the women. The techniques are passed from mother to daughter.

Noemi learned to sew from her mother and 8 years ago began a profitable business sewing canvas pants. She is 33 years old, married, and has 2 children, ages 6 and 9, who attend kindergarten and 3rd grade. Noemi has many orders for her pants and is requesting a 4th Kiva loan to buy a sewing machine. She says with a new machine she will be able to effectively increase production.

Noemi is the Secretary of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank Santa Isabel group, located in the department of Totonicapán. Along with 10 other women who speak the Maya K'iche' language, she attends monthly meetings to participate in the Microcredit Plus program of small loans, education, and healthcare. The women make loan payments and then learn how to budget, invest, and save so that their businesses in clothing fabrication or fruit growing can be successful. Noemi says she appreciates learning more about loan management and investing. The women also learn about healthcare, family matters, and women's issues.

The partnership between Friendship Bridge and Kiva investors is essential to the women's business development and success. Thank you, Kiva!
