San Miguel El Tejar Group's story

The two women in the group San Miguel El Tejar live in El Tejar, Chimaltenango, Guatemala. They are both single with grown children. One went to middle school and has a small restaurant. The other has a second-grade education and makes and sells tablecloths and traditional blouses. She also makes and sells tamales on the weekends.

They are starting their first cycle with the Namaste Creating Prosperity Program. They joined the program because they wanted to improve their sales and learn how to better manage their businesses to be more profitable. They are optimistic that with Namaste’s financial literacy classes and visits from a personal business advisor they will meet their goals.

Irma Yolanda is 55 years old. She attended middle school and has three grown children. For many years she was a cook in restaurants in the city of Antigua. Two years ago she opened her own small restaurant where she prepares traditional Guatemalan dishes. She will use her loan to buy a microwave and a pressure cooker as well as meat and vegetables. Her goal is to get her restaurant well established, to add additional dishes that her customers have requested and to put into practice all she learned during her years working in restaurants.

Irma Yolanda's monthly net profit at the beginning of this cycle was 4,160 Guatemalan Quetzales ($540). She hopes to increase that to Q. 4,810 ($625) by the end of the cycle.
