Cedro Alto's story
This loan may have a higher risk but higher impact. Learn more here. This is the second Kiva loan to Cedro Alto, also known as Direct Origin Trading. View Cedro Alto's last loan here. In Colombia, smallholder coffee farmers have little access to international markets, limiting their ability to capture the true value of their coffee. This perpetuates the cycle of poverty. Margins tend to be thin or non-existent due to commodity volatility and buying power of middlemen, causing many to lose their farms and migrate to the cities. Based in Colombia, Cedro Alto is a farmer collective that pays a premium above market prices to farmers at time of harvest and connects farmers directly to craft roasters. To date, Cedro Alto has improved livelihoods of 150 farmers and their families and workers. This Kiva loan of $100,000 will allow Cedro Alto to purchase three additional shipping containers worth of coffee and pre-finance the harvests of at least 25 additional farming families.
