A loan helped an artist and woman entrepreneur grow her alterations and creative business.
I have been a maker most all of my life in some form. In the past I owned Sensational Surfaces, a faux/decorative painting business located in Fayetteville serving NW Arkansas for over 20 years. I painted many kitchen cabinets, walls, ceilings, floors, furniture pieces and murals in homes and businesses while raising two daughters as a single parent. After a back injury that caused permanent disability and the then failing economy, I had to end that painting business. Next after regrouping, I decided to follow another creative passion, sewing... it's in my blood! I come from a long line of sewists and creative women, my grandmothers were both quilters, my sister had a quilting business, sews garments, dyes fabric and does surfaces design on fabric and my mother was a sewing genius! She could sew anything and did beautiful works. I further gained experience by working at the Walton Arts Center in Fayetteville as the head dresser and sewist for various Broadway shows that came to the center. I worked with Olive Loom (who has been a recipient of a Kiva loan in the past) doing production work for its garments for its customers. I also worked with BonnerBell a former local design company sewing custom clothing and alterations. I really enjoyed creating original garments and helping people with special fit needs and updating their older garments. Unfortunately, that business closed. Most recently I did alterations for a clothing icon located on the historical square in Fayetteville, Town and Country Shop, established in 1961. Due to retirement of the owner, this business closed in December 2019. So, since I have been working/sewing from my home (in a pickup and delivery scenario), I launched Cate McCoy Studio sewing custom clothing and alterations. I also still paint original oil and other mediums, portraits, landscapes and modern abstract works.
