Christine's story

Christine is 20 years old and lives in the town of Makindye in the Makindye region of Uganda. She is married and has two children with one of them currently in school. For the past three years, Christine has been working hard to manage her clothing sales business, where she sells clothes.

To help expand her business, Christine has requested a loan of 1,200,000 Ugandan shillings (UGX) from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy more clothes to sell, and will help Christine to generate greater profits. Christine's business will expand, hence making more profits, and she will be able to support her family, thereby improving their standard of living. Christine hopes that in the future she will be able to buy land and build a house.

Christine is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.
