Las Marias Group's story

The skills of weaving and embroidering the colorful traditional blouses or "huipiles" of Guatemala has been passed down from generation to generation for over 4,000 years! Maria is a textile artisan who sits on the floor embroidering with colorful thread, as she speaks Spanish with her Maya Kakchiquel accent. She describes how each "huipil" is embroidered with birds traditional to her local area of Chimaltenango.

The "huipiles" of Maria are very popular and in strong demand, so she is requesting a Kiva loan to buy a variety of quality colored thread, yarns, and fabrics. The loan is important to this 56-year-old mother of nine children over the age of 19, whom she continues to support.

Maria is the treasurer of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank "Las Marias". On a monthly basis, she receives the loan payments from the other seven members. Then, the group participates in educational trainings that are a part of the "Microcredit Plus" program of small loans, education and healthcare services. A facilitator engages the ladies with images, games and role playing, in four main areas: business, health, women and family.

Maria and her friends are eager to learn business management skills that they can put it into practice in their traditional textile businesses, convenience stores and tailoring workshops.

Kiva lenders provide a vital service in the lives of "Las Marias" as they partner with Friendship Bridge. Thank you!
