Mercedes Maricela's story

Around the neighborhood of Cady at the Colon parish of canton Portoviejo, people works in agriculture and in the preparation of highly regarded typical food, such as creole chicken broths and stews, as well as banana roasted in clay ovens.

Mercedes Maricela is 69-years-old living in a common-law relationship, she has three children. Her partner makes his living in agriculture; they live in their own house.

Mercedes continues with her small grocery store at home, selling essential consumer stuff such as dairy products, detergents, meat, bread, sodas, household goods, hair dyes, imitation jewelry and a variety of clothing. She sells them on site and when the opportunity arises she goes from house to house, gives credit to her customers and collects weekly. With this new credit she will buy products and clothes to stock the store in order to satisfy her clientele. She dreams of expanding the business and keep her good health.
