Claudio's story

Claudio is an artisan from Mexico who specializes in traditional handcrafted Mexican alebrijes. He would like to invest in a purchase of materials, including wood, paint and brushes, as well as bring on additional artisans at his workshop.

Claudio has been selling through NOVICA since 2017. This is his story:

'I’'m Claudio and I was born in Oaxaca. My parents are also artists in the tradition of the Mazatec and Zapotec peoples. When I was six, my mother began teaching me to make 'alebrijes',' which are small and fanciful figurines whose form is dictated by natural twigs and branches.

My sculptures are crafted in the same way as traditional alebrijes, but I felt I had to do something different. I think bulls are admirable and emblematic. They symbolize power, honor and strength, and I began making alebrijes in their likeness. I want to demonstrate the principles my mother taught me through my crafts, which are loyalty, honor, respect for the family and love for my work. I think that every day is a struggle and, in that struggle, alebrijes are our guardians. Thank you very much for your support. It is nice to know that there are people like you who care so much about preserving our art and traditions."
