A loan helped to build a rural community bank office.
Caja Rural De Curti Group's story
The Community Bank of Curtí has five years of existence. It is currently the only (grassroots) platform that provides access to financial services in this rural indigenous community located in East Panama. The majority of its members and beneficiaries are women. Curti's population is a mix of three different ethnic groups: indigenous Guna, Embera and latino. The main economic activity of Curti is plantain farming, commercialization of produce from nearby communities and artcraft making. For members of the community bank, this has become an opportunity to save within their own community and get loans to invest in their local enterprises and household improvements. Therefore, the community of Curtí has benefited greatly from the community bank. Given the success and growth of the community bank of Curtí, they are requesting a loan to finish building the office where members meet on a weekly basis, in order to make it a more adequate space for them and other potential community bank members in the community. The community bank is lead and managed by three courageous women: Mrs. Carolina (president of the rural bank of Curtí), Mrs. Aura (secretary) and Mrs. Johana (treasurer), the baby on the photo is the daughter of the treasurer, and hopefully, in some years, she'll be one of the youngest community bank members.
