Cristobal Group's story

Elena, president of the Communal Bank "Cristobal," says "treat animals with peace of mind, give them good food and provide the necessary care, guarantees a good sale." This activity of raising and selling cattle is a business that Elena has carried out for 28 years. She received seven years of school education, is married and currently has no children. Elena and her husband work to make this animal husbandry business a success. To increase the number of animals in the business, Elena applied for a 2nd Kiva loan. She plans to use this capital to buy a calf.

In the rural area of the state of Suchitepéquez, there is this communal bank that is made up of 11 women who fight every day to move their families forward. Elena and the rest of her companions begin their second cycle of Kiva loans. The women plan to invest in small businesses such as planting corn and beans, selling medicine, prepared food, and raising animals (bulls, cows, chickens). Every month Elena and her classmates learn about topics such as savings, budget and planning, as well as nutrition, hygiene and health. Twice a month, these women are also cared for by nurses at preventive health clinics. These “plus” benefits are offered by the “Microcredit Plus” program of Puente de Amistad (loans, training and health).

The financing of lenders from Kiva drives the business of Elena and her companions. Thank you!
