Florecitas De Patzun Group's story

Bales of used clothing and shoes from the United States and Canada are popular in numerous areas in Guatemala. Often, a shopkeeper will post a sign outside of the shop announcing that a bale of used items is to be opened that day. Carmen, The President of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Florecitas de Patzun” or “Flowers of Patzun” has a used clothing business. She is a 45 year old married mother of 7 children who range in age from 6-25. She is proud that 3 of her children finished high school while the others are still in school Carmen is requesting her 5th KIVA loan to buy more used articles to resell. There are 7 ladies in the Trust Bank who meet monthly to make loan payments and to participate in relevant educational trainings, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education and health care services. They can apply the information immediately to their lives and the topics range from effective business management practices to health, hygiene, nutrition and women’s rights/roles. Every other month, the women have access to basic health care services. (The children that appear in the photograph are children of some women who make up the communal bank). Carmen and her friends greatly appreciate the generosity of KIVA investors. The loans will help each of them with their businesses selling personal care products, traditional textiles, medicines and chicken by the pound. Thank you to each of you!
