Las Gardenias De Coatepeque Group's story
Thirty-six year old Ilsa is a member of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Las Gardenias de Coatepeque”. She shares, “I am requesting my 1st KIVA loan to invest in my small food business. I plan to buy kitchen utensils, spices, as well as plastic baskets and buckets so that I can offer my delicious foods while walking on the streets in my community.” Her income, combined with that of her husband, will help meet the household needs of her family including the education of 3 children who range in age from 8-18. Her goals are to expand the business, improve the quality of life for the family, continue to send the children to school and to empower herself. The Friendship Bridge “Microcredit Plus” program combines small loans, educational trainings, healthcare services and advanced trainings. The 7 ladies in the Trust Bank plan to invest their loans into their tortilla shops, convenience stores, commercial sales of coffee, shoes and prepared foods. They acquire basic management tools in their monthly meetings and also learn about health, family matters and women’s issues. These trainings are taught by a Facilitator who uses games, role playing, pictures and diagrams to share the information. Every other month, the women have access to basic health care services. From the department/state of Suchitepequez in Guatemala, Ilsa and her 6 friends thank KIVA investors and wish each of you a great new year!
