Las Rosas De Candelaria Group's story

In the department/state of Quetzaltenango there are warm places throughout the year, with the wet season often cloudy and the dry season quite sultry. It is important to have a good roof on the house. Forty-eight year old Maria, a member of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Las Rosas de Candelaria," is concerned about the roof on her home before the wet season comes. She has a food business and shares, “I am requesting a KIVA loan to buy a stove, pots, pans, and spices so that I can update my food stand.” She has planned carefully and is certain that she will be more successful with the upgrades. Maria wants to help her husband with the household expenses. She is proud to have been able to provide her 4 children a complete education.

There are 9 ladies in the Trust Bank group who have “tortillerias” or tortilla shops, as well as food stands, sell pork, or sell personal care products via catalogue sales. At their monthly meetings, they learn about effective business practices like budgeting, planning, investing, and savings. They also learn about the dangers of over-indebtedness. Other topics are drawn from 3 areas: health, family, and women. Every other month, the women have access to health care services. Friendship Bridge calls the combination of loans, education, and health care “Microcredit Plus."

Thank you to each KIVA investor for stepping up to the plate to fund these much appreciated loans! Maria and her friends are stepping into a brighter future with your help!
