A loan helped to purchase more green bananas and cassava to increase her sales.

Joneles's Group's story

Jonoles's Group is comprised of five hardworking women. Joneles is 23 years old and lives in the town of Kasese in the Makindye region of Uganda. For the past year, she has been working hard to manage her grocery store, which sells green bananas (plantains), cassava, tomatoes, etc.

To help expand her business, Jonoles has requested a share of a loan of 2,800,000 Ugandan shillings (UGX) from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to purchase more green bananas and cassava to increase her sales. It will help Jonoles to generate greater profits and her production will increase and attract more revenue. She will manage to buy food for her family and clothes for herself. Jonoles hopes that in the future she will be able to buy long term assets like a plot of land and own a retail shop.

Jonoles is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.
