Katbalpom's loan finished fundraising, but these other borrowers need your support

A loan helped to pay for wet cacao to smallholder farmer members of the association.

Katbalpom's story

Katabalpom is a smallholder cocoa association of Maya Qeqchi farmers who live in Salacuim, a village that belongs to the Lachuá Eco-Region, in the surrounding area of Parque Nacional Laguna Lachua, in Alta Verapaz. Fifty-five smallholder farmers are registered in the association and together they harvest from 59.22 hectares of organic certified cacao. The association purchases wet "fresh" cacao from farmer association members and other farmers in the surrounding area, in order to centrally ferment and dry it for export.

They are interested in having money available at the start of harvest to purchase wet cacao from producers and pay as they deliver. This way, the farmers have immediate access to income to be able to purchase very important things like food, medicine, and education for their kids. The impact in this is that farmers will be more interested in delivering beans to the association, which will increase production for the 2020 harvest, and the farmers will have more income for themselves.
