Charles's story

I grew up here in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. We lived in Brewers Hill. Life was tough for my mom raising children on her own. There were 10 children. As a young boy I was introduced to entrepreneurship. My grandparents and my aunt and uncle had businesses. It intrigued me being there and learning. I felt important when I was at the sweet shop or the store. Helping out definitely had an impact on me. I attended Lloyd Street Elementary School and Lincoln High School. I did well. I started shining shoes at age 8 on the streets of Milwaukee. I carried a mason jar with 2 tins of polish, 2 brushes and a few rags. I eventually was given a real shoe shine kit and a regular spot at the taxi stand so I wouldn't have to be on the streets. When I got older I hit a few bumps in the road. Fortunate for me there were people along the way that helped me to get back on track. I was in sales for over 30 years. I sold Kirby Home Cleaning Systems and I also had my own business for a while. I'm not where I want to be, but I feel like I have been given a second chance. I want to set up my shop where I can introduce young men and women to the art of shining shoes. My dream is to teach them how to set up pick up and delivery service from the big companies in town. This can be a way for the to become entrepreneurs or use it as a tool for future endeavors. I get excited about helping others because others helped me along the way and I want to give back.
