Janet's Group's story

Janet's Group is comprised of two hardworking women. Janet is 23 years old and lives in the town of Isingiro in the Mbarara region of Uganda. She is married and has one child. For the past five years, she has been working hard to manage her retail shop where she sells flour, matchboxes, sugar and soap. Janet is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities and a forum for life-skills training.

Janet is requesting a 3,000,000 UGX loan from BRAC Uganda to buy flour, sugar, matchboxes and soap. She will use her loan to expand her business and generate greater profits. Janet will use the profit from her loan to assist her husband to pay school fees for their child and to buy personal items such as clothing, paying house bills and providing basic needs for her family such as food. Janet hopes to improve her family's living standards. In the future, she wants to open a retail shop to generate more income.
