I grew up in a suburban neighborhood outside of Philadelphia, PA. I was fortunate that I grew up in an extremely diverse school system and friendships with people of varying races, socioeconomic backgrounds, and upbringings. It was very inclusive – we all got along well. I’ve had diverse teachers throughout all 12 years of my primary education. So, this is the world that I was used to and expected when I entered the work world, but to my disappointment, this is not the case. I’ve experienced bias on every level of my career – from being denied opportunities to being asked inappropriate questions as a woman of color. I started my business because I want to be part of creating a world where women of color have the opportunities to grow their careers based on their expertise, skills, education, and work ethic and not just on the intersectionality of their race and gender. I learned how to navigate the world of work through trial and error - I learned what worked and what doesn't work. I learned the secret to being visible and valued at work. I had the opportunity to build my own opportunities both inside and outside of the workplace and I teach others how to do the same. Today, I live in Columbia, South Carolina, raising my daughter as a single mom. I want her to know that she can truly do anything she puts her mind to. I would love nothing more than for her to enter a workforce which accepts and values her for who she is and for her to be equipped with the knowledge to successfully navigate her career. This is my dream for all girls and women of color.
