Lydia's story

Lydia is 22 years old and lives in the town of Makindye in the Makindye region of Uganda. She is married and has 2 children, 1 of them is currently in school. For the past 3 years, Lydia has been working hard to manage her clothing sale business which sells shirts, jeans, and jackets.

To help expand her business, Lydia has requested a loan of 2,000,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy more clothes to sell and will help Lydia generate greater profits. With expanded business, Lydia will be able to meet basic needs at home and provide for her children thereby improving their standards of living. Lydia hopes that, in the future, she will be able to buy land and build a house.

Lydia is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.
