A loan helped to purchase more shoes.

Catherine's story

Catherine is 20 years old and lives in the town of Bulenga in the Kiyinda region of Uganda. She is married and has two children who are all currently in school. For the past three years, Catherine has been working hard to manage her shoes business, which sells ladies' shoes.

To help expand her business, Catherine has requested a loan of 2,000,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to purchase more shoes and will help Catherine to generate greater profits. Catherine will use the profits of the business to assist her husband in paying school fees for their children, buying personal items like clothes, paying house bills, and providing basic needs for the family like food, thereby improving their standards of living. Catherine hopes that in the future she will be able to buy a plot of land.

Catherine is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities and a forum for life-skills training.
