Estrellitas Del Rejon Group's story

Women are characterized by seeking ways to get money in order to improve living conditions for themselves and their families. This has been demonstrated by Heidy, one of the members of the Communal Bank "Estrellitas del Rejon."

She is 32 years old and attended nine years at school. Eleven years ago Heidy separated from her husband and decided to fight for her two children (8 and 11 years old). Eight years ago she started selling clothes, shoes and food (french fries). Thanks to these gains, Heidy has the ability to provide for the basic conditions for her children, send them to elementary school and have a decent home. She is requesting a second Kiva loan to buy clothes in bulk.

There are seven women of Kaqchiquel Mayan descent who are part of this communal bank. They live in the rural area of the Department (state) of Sacatepéquez, and sell corn tortillas, typical sweets, and medicine. Other women produce natural products (shampoo, soap, oils, relaxers) and have small agricultural plots (blackberries, green beans, corn, and beans).

They meet monthly to participate in educational training, and every two months have access to basic health services. The combination of loans, education and health is called "Microcredit Plus." Educational training is vital to its success and covers an aspect of four themes: business, health, women, and family.

The helping hand between Kiva and Puente de Amistad lenders allows women like Heidy to reach another level of integral development. Thank you!
