Christine's Group's story

Christine's group is comprised of 2 hard-working women. Christine is 18 years old and lives in the town of Mityana in the Kiyinda region of Uganda. For the past 2 years, Christine has been working hard to manage her food stall, which sells green bananas, sweet potatoes, and tomatoes.

To help expand her business, Christine has requested a share of 1,000,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy green bananas, cassava, and potatoes, and will help Christine to generate greater profits. Christine will realize more profits from the expanded business, cater for her family, and hence she will be in position to improve her standards of living. Christine hopes that in the future she will be able to buy land and build a house.

Christine is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, as well as a forum for life-skills training.
