A loan helped to buy more medicines, and a collection of silver and gold jewelry.

Ixcan Group's story

The three women in the group Ixcan live in Samayac, Suchitepéquez, Guatemala. They speak both Spanish and the Mayan language, Quiche. They range in age from 44 to 60, and their businesses include selling jewelry, medicines, beauty products and traditional fabric.
They have each completed previous cycles with the Namaste Creating Prosperity Program and are looking forward to more advanced classes in financial literacy, and visits from a business adviser.

Faustina is 60 with a 5th grade education. She has one grown child and is separated from her husband. For 22 years she has had a business selling silver and gold jewelry. Along the way she became a certified midwife. From that work she learned about medicines and now also sells a selection of useful medicines.
In her time with Namaste she has learned how to test her jewelry so she can guarantee it to her customers, how to listen to and communicate with her customers, and to mark the prices on her products. She will use her loan to buy more medicines, and a collection of silver and gold jewelry.

Her business goal is to have a small shop. Her personal goal is to save enough money so that she doesn’t have to depend on her children at her old age. When she started with Namaste her monthly net profit was 3000 Guatemalan Quetzales ($390). At the beginning of this cycle it was 6560 GTQ ($852). And by the end of this cycle she hopes to increase that to 8730 GTQ ($1134).
