Jerry's story

I grew up in East Harlem, NY in a close-knit Spanish community. It was just my mother and I and she worked very hard to provide for us. She also made sure to keep our Mexican heritage alive with me, including the food we ate. She always wanted to have a food business of her own, but put that dream on the back burner to care for me. We moved from East Harlem to Staten Island. Though we were in a different borough, we moved to an area that had the same community as the one we lived in Harlem. I made friends with business owners in the area and we only shopped local for our household needs. I saw all the hard work and dedication that went into owning your own business. As I got older, I developed that same passion, to do something for myself, something that I believed in, and was passionate about. In March of 2019, I got the opportunity to rent a space in my local community of Staten Island. Not only was I able to make my dream come true, but my mother is also a part of it with me. I feel that creating Botanas is a way of giving back to my mother for all her help and support, as well as, providing my community with traditional and cultural food. My goal is to be able to expand my product offerings, as well as open additional locations so that more people can experience my ice cream and treats.
