Yellow Leaf Hammocks's story
This is Yellow Leaf Hammocks’ second Kiva loan. Their first Kiva loan was successfully repaid. Check out their beautiful video here. The Problem Yellow Leaf weavers are among the 1.2 million hill-tribe members in Thailand who exist on society’s lowest rung; many lack rights and social services as aliens in their own country. Many are vulnerable to exploitation (sex trafficking, child labor, indentured servitude) and subsist in extreme poverty on less than $1.50/day. The Solution By creating higher wage jobs, Yellow Leaf provides the foundation for revolutionary social change: a stable, middle-class income. Extreme poverty underlies a host of social ills (e.g., civil rights violations, environmental degradation, denial of education, malnutrition & disease). This tremendous income boost empowers weavers to improve conditions for their families and community, breaking the cycle of poverty. Weavers value the independence and fluidity of their work, which allows them to preserve essential cultural traditions. Loan Use and Impact This loan will allow Yellow Leaf to fulfill purchase orders and create new income opportunities for 60 weavers by ensuring they have the required funds to produce orders. Yellow Leaf Hammocks is also a Kiva Field Partner. Learn more here.
